My wife continued to look around to see if any of the other cats fit the bill. She asked about two of them, and Lois indicated that they were both "terrible" despite what they wrote in the description. It was obvious at that point that she did not want to allow us to adopt a cat, so we left.
We had an approved application, and tried to contact Angels Wish to set an adoption date. My wife called and sent several emails to Lois with no follow up. I emailed the general email address, and received an email back an hour or two later. Lo and behold, it was Lois. I replied that we had attemped to contact her. She contacted my wife to arrange the adoption date.
Upon telling my wife about being scratched, Lois forced herself into the conversation and asked what "I had done" to cause the situation. I asked her what she meant by that, as I was simply petting the cat inside of her cage. I have had several cats and understand their body language. She said that this wasn't the cat for us, and that I was obviously I need no condition to adopt a cat (I was angry about her implication). I excused myself from the situation and went to wash my hand.
Long story short, if you are thinking about adopting from Angel's Wish, avoid Lois or just adopt from somewhere else. We got sick of dealing with her after about a week. In one day at another shelter I found a kitty, filled out an application, had our vet records/references checked, and got approved. Absolutely ridiculous that Lois is allowed to treat people the way she does. Even if her intentions are good, her actions had a real chilling effect on what should have been an enjoyable and loving experience.
When we went to pick her up, she scratched and tried to bite my hand. We have two young kids, so we decided that this was not the cat for us. I have no ill will toward the cat, as she was probably scared.
From reviews and my experience - people seem frequently surprised by the real condition of their "to be" pet. I believe they spend more time vetting you - than providing you with the complete medical info on the cat your are drawn to adopt. I was told of my cat's thyroid issue and need for life long meds and check - ups, which was good. But they told me the meds cost $10 a month vs. the $20 I found out when I refilled the prescription AT THE PHARMACY they had used. That's 2x - and frankly would have been a deciding factor. (a small one, but it was the beginning of misleading me).
What a horrible experience.
Adopt elsewhere. Lois is a nightmare to deal with.
They have beautiful and loving cats, kittens, and handmade, made to order cat furniture. The animals are well cared for by volunteers.
We visited to see if any cats or kittens were a good match for us. The staff were all very nice and seemed to keep the cats best interests in mind. We met a cat and were interested in adopting her.
Adopt rescue cats! We got our two beautiful and sweet kittens. Thank you to everyone who fosters!
I felt I'd be given his pertinent history. WRONG. *After* I had chosen and was paying for my new friend, they gave me his med records - ok. I gave them to the Vet I had chosen and only lightly looked them over. As he wasn't due for an actual visit soon. I thought things were fine. 2 1/2 months later - the very problem that he was returned for - blocked bowel issues came up again. Took him to the (great vet) and got the bad long term news for my fella. For the record, I'm quite smitten with the cat, but now am attached to a cat with far greater needs than I would have chosen. I have written several times (to compliment the cat) but also with concerns - they have never written back or acknowledged me. He was poorly groomed (large hair mats I'm going to have removed - didn't know they could be a problem) and I feel that they were shady about his past (rushed it by me, when making my decision). I think the facility was nice, the volunteer staff friendly - but my initial vetting was uncomfortable and judgmental. The second lady I dealt with was wonderful. I called to thank her.
Earlier this year my girlfriend and I lost her 17yr old tortoisehell (Cali) to kidney failure. Our hearts were broken, but after a few months we thought we'd get another cat. Several weeks of searching on Petfinder later, I saw that a new litter of tortoiseshell kittens was at Angel's Wish. I filled out the online application on a Friday evening, sent a follow-up e-mail Monday morning (to the contact listed, Lois), and called. Phone calls were never answered and e-mails were 2-3 days for a response. When Lois did respond (via e-mail only), she asked many questions about how we would care for the cat and implied that we were bad caregivers. No matter what I said, it wasn't good enough. Lois even called our vet and received all of the records showing we took Cali regularly for the past few years, but she wasn't satisfied. Lois even passive-aggressively attached two articles about the importance of taking cats to the vet in an email.
ASK DETAILED HISTORY QUESTIONS...
TLDR: I had a similar experience to others in regard to Lois. I gave one star for the other staff. She has no business working with people.
